What Happens at a Tattoo Convention?

Greetings Time Bombers! Miss Ruth's Time Bomb recently spent a weekend vending at the Philadelphia Tattoo Arts Convention. What a way to spend a few days! Many people want to know what the scene of a tattoo convention is like and I guess it really depends on the show. If you never ventured to one before, I recommend conventions hosted by Tattoo Kingpin . These shows have lots of entertainment, a mind boggling number of tattoo artists, cool venders, celebrities, tattoo contests, fine art, and educational seminars.

One of my favorite things to do at a convention is to fashion spot! There are so many incredibly stylish folks running about. I love the futuristic look of Candi KaBoom and all the other vintage looks.

This is just one shot to attempt to show the sheer number of people who attended the show. It was wall-to wall people for three days straight. Crazy!

Certainly if a person was considering becoming a tattoo artist they should attend a tattoo convention. For one thing, you need to know the competition is fierce and over flowing. You may also find some of the seminars helpful and a great source of information. The seminars available at the 2012 convention included, Blood Borne Pathogens Training, Lettering Seminar, Microdermals, Basics of Acrylic Painting, Portfolio Reviews, Virtues of an Artist, and A Comprehensive Look at tattooing. Some of these seminars had a fee associated with them and some of them were included in the price of entry. In addition to meeting artist, seeing there work, and taking classes, you could also buy tattooing supplies from companies like Technical Tattoo Supply. No doubt about it if you're an aspiring tattoo artist, you need to attend a tattoo convention.

Another reason many people race to tattoo conventions is for the celebrity sightings. Amy Nicoletto from LA Ink, Megan Massacre from NY Ink, Chris Torres of NY Ink, Permanant Mark from Spike TV, and other celebrities simply just stopped by throughout the weekend. One celebrity, Jessica from NY Ink, stopped by and chatted at our booth. She wasn't there for any other reason then to just hang out. You just never know who you'll bump into!

One of my favorite parts of some tattoo conventions is when they include Side Shows. With their fire eating, sword swallowing, blade cutting, and feats of great strengths, one can't help to be amazed and entertained! The Side Show tropes that performed at the convention were, Penguin Boy and Baron, Olde City SIdeshow, and The Enigma and Serana Rose. In addition to Side Shows, there was many burlesque acts and even a pin-up contest.

Here are the lovely young finalist in the Pinup Contest. I believe the girl in the black lace dress actually won the contest. The picture is not the best, but it does show how adorable the pinups were.

There was a burlesque show nightly.

Tattoo contests are one of the staples of the tattoo convention activities. This convention hosted a Tattoo of the Day for each day of the show and a general Tattoo Contest on Saturday and Sunday. This gives individuals a chance to be photographed by magazines and throw attention and accolades onto the artist.

Then there are the after parties. The official after parties for the Philadelphia Tattoo Convention happened at Troc. Where bands like DisGraceLandD Hook Squad and Murphy's Law played. This was of course followed by the Pretty Poison Burlesque show! I am sure the Sailor Jerry poured freely there, however this tired young lady was in bed and resting up to work another 13 hour day on the tattoo convention floor.

Perhaps the sweetest part of the tattoo convention was the non-profit animal rescue groups. They used the venue as a place to raise awareness, money, and love for foster dogs. One of Miss Ruth's Time Bomb's favorite group of dog loving girls are Pinups for Pitbulls. these ladies deck themselves out in pinup attire and fund education against discrimination against Pit Bull-type dogs, and Bully Breeds. They are currently hosting a model search for their 2013 Pinup for Pitbulls Calendar! If you're a pinup looking gal with a love for Bully Breeds check out www.pinupsforpitbulls.org.

Oh, and probably the best reason to go to a tattoo convention is to get tattooed! Artist from around the world set up shop at the convention. My suggestion is to get on the tattoo conventions website early and look up the artist that will be working the show. If you like their work and want to be tattooed by them, shoot them an email and set an appointment up prior to the show. Be sure to find out how much the piece will cost and come with cash and enough to tip!

I couldn't resist getting into the spirit of the convention and having the lovely Chelsea Rhea tattoo a peanut behind my ear. Peanut has been my nickname for a long time and I have often thought of getting a peanut tattooed behind my ear. I was surprised that it didn't hurt anywhere near as much as I anticipated it would, I was so tired from the show, I almost fell a sleep! Chelsea Rhea has a beautiful tattoo shop, Amulet in St. Pettersburg, Florida. If you live in the area or travel through it, be sure to check out this talented lady.

. One of the best booths at the Philadelphia Tattoo Convention was Martha Rotten. Martha Rotten is the brain child of Francine, pictured above. She apprenticed at swarovski crystals, before forging out on her own and making some of the most original jewelry I have ever seen. Many of her designs are originally casted out of animal bones!

Speaking of people you will meet all kinds of them. The first guy shown above is Horror Show Jack. A very nice man who makes custom fangs. I do not know the man in the middle but could not resist taking his picture. Could you? Finally, there is Nico a very nice boy and his super sweet puppy Frankenstein. We loved up Frankenstein whenever we got the chance.

From hair extensions to art prints, there is something for everyone!

Hungry for the Fashion of the Hunger Games

As mentioned in our newsletter we've been enjoying the audio books of Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games trilogy. I have been living in the dream world she has created for over a week. I adore her heroin Katniss Everdeen. Rarely in pop culture do we get awesome, strong, brave female leads. However, the males in the story are interesting and leave their own impressions, but one of our favorite subplots to the story is the fashion! In each book there is lovely delicious descriptions of unique fashions. From cocktail dresses that look like they're on fire to a wedding dress that transforms into a smoldering bird. In fact fashion is such a focus of the series that they created a website dedicated to it, Capitol Couture. The first movie from the series opens on March 23rd and limited images are surfacing. I wanted to share some of these with our Time Bombers so you can be inspired by the fashionable subplot too!

Here Katniss has just finished her interview. There is some criticism about the portrayal of this dress. It is nothing like described in the book. In the book it is all jewels that appear to be on fire. Who knows maybe they are trying to trick us and in the movie the dress will be breathtaking!

It's a Wonderful Life... When You Wear Vintage Fashion!

Happy Holidays Time Bombers! Last evening while watching It's a Wonderful Life my heart was aching not only for George Bailey but also because of the beautiful vintage fashion. I have collected the best images of the costumes that were available and shared them with you. Take a look and feel the inspiration! Personally, I wish George had married Violet, got out of that old town, and headed out in the world with glitz and glamor!

Violet is my favorite character! Her hat here is unbelievable! I hope to one day wear one just like it!

Fall Into the Color of the 1960s; A Look at Fall Fashion

Greetings Time Bombers. I have been researching and glancing through lots of fashion magazines trying to capture the look of fall 2011 fashion. I must say I am beyond excited. Thank goodness we can say goodbye to those awful dreary neutral shades that bombarded us during spring and summer. They're pretty, but they simply don't command a room's attention, and you're a Time Bomber, whole ballrooms explode when you enter! However, that is all in our fashion past, because fall's colors rolled in like something off Picasso's paint pallet. I could best describes these hues by comparing them to the shades of fruit; tangerines, plums, pumpkins, apples, tomatoes, and a cornucopia of others. Its like a feast for the eyes.

Even more thrilling then the color pallet of fall fashion is the look. It appears to be very 1960s. With big teased hair and beautiful mod makeup. I am telling you, I haven't been this inspired by current fashion trends in a long time. I want you to get charged-up too. So I have attached two videos, one to show you how to tease your hair without damage and another on how to get that great Raquel Welch make-up look of the late 1960s. Introducing the Vintage Fashion Models of the Time Bomb

On August 5th Miss Ruth's Time Bomb had a 12 hour fashion shoot. I selected nine beautiful women to help highlight the variety of vintage clothing that Miss Ruth's Time Bomb has to offer our online customers. Some of the models are faces easily recognized from past shoots, like Hope and Molly, while others are brand new to the Time Bomb modeling family. This shoot was an exhausting affair, but the ladies kept bringing such great energy, I could have done another 12 hours!

West Chester, a Vintage Lovers Delight!

Hey Time Bombers! Recently I visited my Aunt Shane in West Chester, PA. She has been asking me to spend the day shopping with her for an embarrassingly long time and I've always been to busy. However now that the store is closed for renovations I had the time to do a day trip! I had such a great time and wanted to share some of my favorite shops and stops!

The first stop was Cottage Home. They describe themselves as having unique furnishings and vintage flair! What stood out to me the most about this adorable cottage was the amazing display! I dream of being as creative and careful as the mother/daughter team at the Cottage Home. Please if you are in the area check it out! Bring a truck and a shopping bag, because you will leave with both furniture and jewelry!

Here the Cottage Home created a beautiful display with a set of vintage suit cases. They utilized color blocking in their displays throughout the store and the effect was lovely!

Forgive the poor photo here, which is again from the Cottage Home, I took it quickly with my Phone. They had the best wall of costume jewelry! I loved every piece! I was so inspired. I just can't wait to open our shop again!

Next we traveled to Gay Street where we visited The Green Eyed Lady. While I must be honest, I wasn't impressed with their clothing, they carry new lines, but they did have an amazing amount of vintage jewelry! Careful, it is mixed with lots of new jewelry too. I would be sure to ask the sales clerk to make sure you're getting something that is truly vintage. While there you must check out their bakelite collection. I wish I had gotten a picture of it, but I was overwhelmed and not thinking! The owner bought an entire bakelite collection that was once featured in a book. BEAUTIFUL!

After visiting these two stores we took a break at Kiwi Yogurt. What fun! Here you pick your own yogurt flavor or combination of add the toppings and pay for it by weight. I believe it was .49 cents per ounce

Here is the wall of yogurt! They had thirty flavors. I mixed Cheese Cake with Strawberry, both were fat free. I added fresh strawberries and gram crackers. Yummy!

Then we went to my favorite stop all day! Malena's Vintage Boutique. I loved this place and the owner, Malena is amazing. She has been in business for eight years. What an inspiration, she opened the store when she was only 22-years-old. The store is filled with lovely vintage treats! It had some of the greatest evening wear I have ever seen in one spot. She also shared some valuable business tips with me. I truly loved this store and its owner!

My treat to myself at Malena's, Dog shoes. They're made of leather and beyond adorable. It was love at first sight!

Finally, our last stop A Taste of Olive is a store dedicated to Extra Virgin Olive Oils and balsamic Vinegars on tap! They had a huge variety of blends, from earthy tasting to super spicy. I bought Dave the Herbs de Provence blend and it is delicious!

In addition to all this, I thought I would also share a picture of Miss Ruth's new found talents, jewelry making! She treated these different scraps from old jewelry to make them all look old and even made the chain herself! Keep an eye out for when our store re-opens and we have Miss Ruth's new line of jewelry for sale!

Midnight in Paris a Vintage Inspiration!

This weekend I had the pleasure of seeing Woody Allen's new movie Midnight in Paris. Not only was the movie wonderful, but so was the theatre I saw it in, The Majestic, in Gettysburg, PA. The film takes place in both modern day and in the 1920s. The cinematography alone is enough to make this film worth watching, but then there was the fashion! I was never enchanted with the 1920s. I dressed up as a flapper only on one occasion and that was for a "Chicago" themed evening. However, after taking in the scene of this movie I will be adding a little 1920 inspiration into my vintage wardrobe. I hope you get a chance to see the movie and be inspired too!

Here Adriana and Gil simply stroll the streets of Paris. GIl wore this tweed jacket almost the entire movie, Mr. Allen's attempt to always be present in his movies I assume, but it works. While Adriana's dress was a simple, understated pretty. The dress had 2 sets of pleats in the front that kept the skirt sashaying as she walked the unpaved streets of Paris. The Whiting and Davis hand painted, metal meshed purse she is carrying is going to persuade me keep one of our own pieces in my personal collection, as well as put some up for sale at our Etsy Store.

Unfortunately Adriana makes smoking look sooo glamorous. The beading on this garment is exquisite and the obvious weight of the dress seemed to make it move and shake without a hint of effort.

Miss Ruth's Time Bomb was on a Road Trip!

Miss Ruth's Time Bomb hit the road this past weekend to bring our fabulous vintage to New York City and Philadelphia. Our first stop was the Bust Craftacular in NYC. We had a great time and the vendors were so awesome it was hard to stay in the booth! Some of my favorite vendors were Mighty Balls Sandwiches, Sourpuss Pickles, Father Panic, and Kudu~lah. Check out these links if you are interested in good food and craft!

Next our travels took us to Philadelphia for the Punk Flea Market. What an alternative fashion feast. It was hard not to just people stare. Everyone looked so cool. This flea market was where college kids, hipsters, and punks united to shop and support a Unitarian church that hosted free underage concerts. Again, I could barely stay in my booth. Lucky for me, my buddy Christi and my mom was present to share the booth duties. We each took turns walking around and shopping. I bought a great notebook with the cover of Beverly Clearly's children's book Ribsy, a vintage hankie with a poodle on it, and some wonderful vegan treats! Overall, we had a wonderful time and can't wait to vend here again!!!

Ode to Euzine

If you've ever had the pleasure to stroll into Miss Ruth's Time Bomb on a Thursday then you may have met the one-and-only Euzine. Euzine is the Grand Time Bomber that tends to the store on Thursdays. I first met her when she asked me over to her astounding apartment to buy some vintage pieces. She informed me she was changing and wanted to revamp her style, getting rid of old pieces was the first step in the process. I became completely enamored and knew I needed her to be a part of the Time Bomb world. Since our initial meeting Euzine has influenced my style and life. One of the most fashionable woman I have ever met, it is no surprise that she is a faithful subscriber to Vogue and has just renewed her subscription for the next two years. We share a love for movies and our conversations about films are some of my favorites. I can only dream that one day my own home could be a fragment of hers, and I am determined to live my life with the gusto that she has lived hers! Euzine should be celebrated and known by all. But don't take my word for it, stop in on a Thursday between 12-4 and decide for yourself.

Yves Saint Laurent an Inspiration!

I don't truly follow high fashion. While I love to peruse the pictures in Vogue and Teen Vogue, I generally have absolutely no idea who made what and why it is so expensive. However, there is one particular design house that seems to grab me and that is Yves Saint Laurent(YSL). Whenever a glossy fashion picture totally captures my attention and I turn to the small print to discover who the artist is, usually it's no surprise to find the credit going to YSL.

The video I attached is from the YSL Spring 2011 Show. One sure indicator of the fashion future is the re-emersion of the platform shoe. For me this is thrilling, due to my 71 inch height.

The below dress is absolutely one of my favorites. I will be certainly keeping my eye out for its vintage equivalent and instead of sacrificing it to Miss Ruth's Time Bomb I will be keeping it for myself! Okay, Okay I will also keep my eyes open for my Time Bombers too, but me first!

In this next piece I absolutely love that it is sheer and patterned! I find vintage pieces like this and always think they will sell right away and for some reason they seem to stick around. Maybe this spring, with the release of this show, that will change. In my imagination they always look best with a contrasting slip underneath them, because clearly in the real world we can't walk around with our nipples out!

And finally, I've included this cat suit simply because I find these all the time and never put them on the store floor because it seems that they never sell and I end up giving them away because someone tries them on for fun, looks great, and I just want to see it go away. I think I will begin to post them on the Etsy Store and see what the world wide web of Time Bombers think. Look for them soon!
